Fibro removal is the backbone of asbestos work in Toowoomba because fibro is everywhere in the city's housing stock. Asbestos cement sheeting, universally called fibro, was the budget building material of Australia from the 1940s to the 1980s: external wall cladding, internal walls, ceilings, eaves and soffits, bathroom and laundry linings, under-tile sheeting, even backing boards behind old stoves and switchboards. Roughly one in three Australian homes contains asbestos, and homes built or renovated before 1990 are the highest risk group (Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency).
We remove it all: single bathroom strip-outs before a renovation, external cladding from a whole weatherboard-and-fibro home, eaves runs, or full internal strip-outs for builders. Licensed crew, contained work areas, lawful disposal, clearance documentation at the end.
The post-war streets of Harristown, Newtown, Wilsonton and South Toowoomba, and plenty of Rangeville and Centenary Heights, are lined with homes from fibro's golden era. Common locations:
External wall cladding, especially on extensions, sleep-outs and rear sections of older Queenslanders and workers cottages. Eaves and soffit linings, one of the most common asbestos finds in any pre-1990 home. Bathroom, laundry and kitchen wall linings, often behind tiles ("tilux" marble-look panels are a classic). Ceiling sheets in garages and utility rooms. Sheeting under vinyl floors and behind heaters. Wet-area splashbacks.
Flat fibro sheet looks almost identical whether it contains asbestos or not, and post-1990 cellulose fibre cement is harmless. Age and location are strong clues, but only laboratory testing confirms it. For a planned renovation, testing a handful of samples first is cheap insurance and lets you scope the removal properly.
Most asbestos exposure in Australia today doesn't happen in mines or factories. It happens in home renovations. Cutting, drilling, sanding or smashing fibro releases fibres that stay airborne for hours and settle as dust through the whole house. That's why the safety rule is absolute: never cut, drill, sand, saw or waterblast suspected asbestos sheeting. Asbestos-related diseases still kill around 4,000 Australians each year (ASEA), with a latency of 15 to 60 years, meaning exposure during a weekend reno in your thirties can surface as disease in your sixties.
Queensland's rules reflect this. Unlicensed removal is limited to 10 square metres of bonded asbestos, which is less than one wall of one small room. Beyond that, removal must be done by a licensed removalist, and stripping more than 10 square metres from a home without certification is an offence under the Public Health Regulation 2018 (Qld). A licensed Class B crew handles bonded sheeting; anything friable, like badly degraded sheet or old insulation found during strip-out, requires Class A work.
1. Scope and test. We inspect, take samples if the material isn't confirmed, and quote in writing: per-room, per-elevation or whole-house. For builder-managed renovations, we work from your plans and schedule.
2. Notify. Licensed removal work is notified to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland at least five days before starting, using Form 65. We handle it.
3. Contain. Work areas are isolated with plastic sheeting and signage. Floors and paths are protected. For internal strip-outs, we seal the room and control access; furniture and belongings are either removed or sealed off first.
4. Remove wet and whole. Sheets are misted with PVA solution, fixings are extracted, and sheets come off in full pieces wherever possible. Nail holes and edges are the fibre-release points, so nothing is smashed, dropped or broken up for convenience.
5. Wrap and dispose. Everything is double-wrapped in heavy-duty plastic on site, sealed, labelled and transported to a licensed facility. Domestic tip disposal at the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility is limited to 175kg pre-notified loads, so real strip-out volumes go through licensed disposal, which is included in your quote.
6. Clean and clear. HEPA vacuuming and wet-wiping of the work area, visual clearance inspection, and documentation for your records, your builder or your certifier. Independent air monitoring can be arranged for larger or sensitive jobs.
We slot into renovation schedules as the licensed asbestos stage between demolition scoping and the main build. Fixed quotes from plans, five-day notification handled, clearance documentation issued fast so the site is back in your hands without hold-ups. If your client's job uncovers suspect sheeting mid-build, our emergency service can usually attend within a day to test, make safe and keep your program moving. It's the same licensed asbestos removal Toowoomba builders rely on.

Bonded asbestos sheeting typically costs $30 to $60 per square metre to remove, per 2025 Australian cost guides, including disposal. A bathroom strip-out commonly runs $1,000 to $2,500 depending on size and fixtures. Whole-house cladding removal is quoted from measurement, usually several thousand dollars. Written quotes are free.
No. Fibro sheeting made before about 1987 almost always contains asbestos, while sheets manufactured after 1990 are asbestos-free cellulose cement. Because old and new sheets look nearly identical, and many homes mix both after decades of repairs, laboratory testing is the only way to be certain which you have.
Sometimes. Asbestos sheeting in good condition, sealed and painted, can legally stay in place, and painting over it is a recognised management approach. But you cannot cut, drill, sand or tile-glue into it safely, which makes most renovations impractical. For wet areas being renovated, removal is nearly always the right call.
A single bathroom or laundry is usually one day including clean-up. Whole-house external cladding takes two to four days depending on size and access. Add the mandatory five-day notification period to WHSQ before licensed work starts, so plan for roughly a week and a half from acceptance to a cleared site.
Generally yes, if the sheeting is intact, sealed and undisturbed. Bonded asbestos in good condition releases negligible fibres. Risk comes from damage and disturbance: cracked sheets, weathered surfaces, drilling, or renovation work. Have suspect materials inspected, keep them painted, and get professional removal before any work that would disturb them.
Yes, eaves and soffit removal is one of our most requested jobs, either standalone or with cladding work. Eaves sheets are removed whole, wet-stripped from below with the ceiling cavity protected, wrapped and disposed of lawfully. Expect most single-home eave replacements to be completed within a day.
Yes. Every job ends with a visual clearance of the work area and written documentation covering the removal and lawful disposal. Independent licensed asbestos assessor clearances and air monitoring can be arranged where a project or certifier requires them. Builders across Toowoomba use us for exactly this paperwork trail.
